Just wanted to update you on a couple of things that happened during our second week of school. During our grammar time, we took a deeper look into what makes up a complete sentence. We also discussed the difference between simple and complete subjects and predicates. Students then had the opportunity to identify these things in their own writing.
We also started one of my favorite times of the day: Our Read Aloud Time! This is a time that I can simply read a book to the students for enjoyment. A lot of times when I read a book to the kids, we are analyzing the text from several different angles and really trying to decipher what the author's message is. During our read a loud time, students can simply kick back and enjoy reading a book (or listening to a book being read) for the fun of it. We started our first book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. The students are loving it and I have to say. . . so am I!
Be sure to ask them about both of these fun things at home!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Ah yes... subject and predicate... grammar... writing. As parents we relive the learning process again through our children. Exciting times for our 4th graders - this is a big year for them all in reading and writing - continuing the process of transitioning from "little kid" skills with their pens (well, pencils) to "big kid" skills. And not just printing - cursive too. Composition and comprehension and creativity and structure are all aspects of reading they should be recognizing in books and using in their own writings. And building vocabulary (with the correct spelling). Quite frankly, it seems like our children just cannot read enough - meaning read as much as possible - that practice is priceless. Thank you Ms. Monk for all that you do! It's fun when our kids come home excited about being at Carroll.
