I choose a Good Attitude!

Today our Highway Hero was Amelia Earhart.  We learned about her adventures in flying and how she always had a great attitude.  We learned that we should always have a great attitude just like her.  We also learned that attitude is a choice and we should always strive to make great choices.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

I choose Fitness

Today we had a blast talking about how we can CHOOSE FITNESS.  The Booster Team introduced students to our Highway Hero, Glenn Cunningham. It’s possible that this was the first time we have heard about Cunningham, but after listening to his story, everyone is sure to remember him. For some students, choosing to be active is difficult, but after hearing Cunningham’s perseverance despite his setbacks and our team doing fun exercises in the classroom, we hope students feel motivated to get outside and play more often.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

I choose Learning!

Today we had a great lesson from Air Jordan.  We learned that learning is a choice.  We also learned about how Thomas Edison loved to read books which led him to invent hundreds of things.  Our class made a great connection to Thomas Edison because our class loves to read as well.  Boosterthon gave our class a book called Highway USA - The Crossing Twins and the School Flag Fiasco.  This book highlights everything we have learned this week in our boosterthon character lessons.  It makes a great addition to our classroom library for all students to be able to check out during the school year, to be reminded of all the things we are learning this week.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

The Ned Show

PTA sponsored a great show this morning to end our Red Ribbon Week. The NED show was an interactive show which kept kids entertained and reminded them to . . .
Never give up
Encourage Others and
Do your Best
Each child received a yo-yo and an instruction sheet on how to complete several yo-yo tricks that they saw today.  If you would like more information or are interested more in the show we saw today, please visit thenedshow.com

Mrs. Monk

I choose Character!

Today we had a great lesson on how to choose character in our everyday lives.  We learned about how Abraham Lincoln got his nickname "Honest Abe."  Abe went to buy something at the store and when the cashier lady gave him his change back, she gave him too much money.  He choose character by being honest and giving the lady the extra money back.  The students loved this story.  We even had a student give a specific example of how he had seen his dad do the same thing one time at the store.  Wow! That reminded me very quickly of 2 things - 1. Those little precious eyes are ALWAYS watching and 2. You guys are such wonderful parents and examples to your kids.  Thanks for already instilling great values in them and being examples of how to always choose character.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

I choose Leadership

Today our Boosterthon guy, Air Jordan, talked to the kids about choosing leadership.  He spoke to them about being great examples for their classmates and to the kindergarteners.  He also spoke about how Martin Luther King Jr. made great choices in his life and wanted all people to be treated equally.  The kids really loved learning about how to choose leadership.  They also loved getting to have their shoes off for the day!! And guess what?! Because of all of your hard work we earned TWO MORE of our class incentives for us to enjoy tomorrow.  And not to brag but . . . as of right now our class is in 1st place in the whole school!  Thanks so much for helping your kid raise money for our school.  Keep up the great work!

Sincerely,
Mrs Monk

My instruction was to place your shoes on the carpet.  THis is what I walked into . . . I was SO impressed!  Kuddos to all you parents for helping them be organized.  :-)

Boosterthon Day 1

Today we had our first classroom visit from our Boostherthon friends.  Our class transformed into a team: Monk's Monkeys.  We also determined fun class incentives that would encourage us to raise more money for our school. We also got our first prize today: our team boostherthon jerseys.  This fundraiser provides us with a fun and exciting week of  learning about how to make good choices while raising money for our school. Stayed tuned for more of the fun!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Our team billboard.

Our Pledge-O-Meter: This shows the different incentives we are working towards as a class.
Our school goal: get a pledge from all 50 states.
If as a school, we get a pledge from all 50 states, then we can have an all school PAJAMA DAY!  These are the states our class has already received pledges from to help our school meet that goal.

We got our first prize!  Our team jersey!!
Be sure to have the students wear this on our FUN RUN day: November 1st.

Fire Safety Town

Last week we had the privilege to go to Frisco Fire Safety Town on a study trip. We learned all about pedestrian and vehicle safety. Your kiddos had a blast getting to drive the jeeps and getting to use the crossing signs. Be sure to ask them about all they learned. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Sincerely,
Mrs.Monk

In order to get an all smiling picture, I have to promise a silly picture. :-)
