Yes, you can!!

Today we had Lloyd Bachrach to our school to talk with our kids and inspire them.  He is a para-Olympian and explained to the kids that he was born with a disability. He was born without some of the bones in his legs.

He had to figure out new ways to do simple things. His parents did not give up on him and provided him with the environment that he needed to thrive. He talked about how his principal and teachers inspired him and treated him like any other student and pushed him to be stronger and to not let anything hold him back.

He also talked with the kids about changing their thinking from the term disabled to differently abled.
We all work differently.  Every single person has different abilities and that should be what we focus on.

Every single person also faces challenges that are important to them.  He gave us 5 things that have helped him along the way that can help us for any challenge we face.

5 keys to success
- Build high self esteem
- Have a positive attitude
- Set and meet goals
- Preserve - don't give up!
- Take care of your health

Then he left us with this final thought: The only limitations we have are the ones we place on ourselves.

A HUGE thank you to our PTA for bringing him in and inspiring our school. The kids loved it and were truly inspired!!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Do you want to build a snowman?

I don't think any of us expected to be here today.  I even heard some of the kids say, "Why did the teachers make us come today!" Ha!  Even though we are still getting a lot of learning done today (or at least attempting to), we had to take a break and go have fun in the snow.  How often do you get to play in the snow with your classmates AT SCHOOL?  If you can't beat their excitement, you might as well join them! :-) Enjoy some of the pictures!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Mrs. Cypert throwing snowballs at all of our windows.  I think she is ready to have some 4th graders come out and play! :-)

Teachers love the snow too!

High Touch High Tech

Today we had the great pleasure of having a scientist come into our room and teach us all about electricity.  Scientist Sarah was so great with the kids!

We learned a lot about Thomas Edison and his different inventions and patents.  We learned that he did not actually invent the light bulb, however he helped perfect it!  We also learned an interesting fact: He also coined the phrase "Hello."

We learned about static electricity and how protons and electrons react when they are separated.  :-)  There are some great pictures below to show our learning.

We also learned about open and closed circuits. We were able to create both types of circuits with our bodies and then with batteries and light bulbs.

The scientist then showed the students a lightening globe.  Each child was able to touch the globe.  It was definitely a highlight of the day.

A special thanks to our PTA for sponsoring this great event for our fourth graders.  They learned so much and had a blast at the same time!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk
