Boosterthon Fun Run

Yesterday was a complete success!  The students loved getting to complete the fun run.  Thank you to all the parents that were able to come and make this day even greater.  Below are some pictures and videos from our fun afternoon.  Hope you enjoy!

Also, check out this video from the Boosterthon!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Also a BIG thanks for Mrs. Edwards for capturing and sharing the pictures below!  They are all really cute!

I tried to capture some video too.  They aren't the best, but it will give you some idea of the fun we had!

This was breaking through our banner (we went a little before we were suppose to, so I only got a few seconds of it).

This is right at the beginning of the run.  We started off with a walking lap first, but you can tell they are eager and ready to RUN!!

This video is side-ways!  I tried to edit the video, but my computer won't allow me too.  Just turn your head sideways or watch it on a device that will allow you to see it.  This is right when the color war started.  Boy, did they LOVE this!

Thank Your Crowd

Today the Community Challenge is THANK YOUR CROWD. Students’ parents and teachers are their biggest fans, and it’s important that they learn to thank them for all they do.

Below is a link to the Thank Your Crowd lesson.

4th grade performance

Today the students performed in Celebrate Carroll!  They did a great job and everyone loved it!  I tried to video the whole thing but my phone filled up too quickly.  I will post the video of what I do have for those of you that could not make it today.  Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Short but cute!

Mrs. Courcy put together this great video of great friendships throughout the school to go along with our performance today!  Thanks Mrs. Courcy for sharing your wonderful talent with our school.  We are lucky to have you here at Carroll!

Weekend Challenge - Boosterthon

Boosterthon is in full swing and we are having a great time!  Today our class got to enjoy the silly sock reward.  On Monday, we will have Crazy Hair Day and Extra Recess.   The Weekend Challenge has been set before the class.  If students receive a $2 donation per lap or a flat donation of $60, they will receive the extra prize of cool sunglasses (ask your child for more information about them - they were going on and on in class about them).

During our team huddles, students learned about how to listen for feedback in our community. Students learned that feedback is a good thing and that we can learn from other people's constructive criticism.

Below is the link to a Video Lesson that goes over the same lesson the students learned today!  Please feel free to watch it and learn more about how Boosterthon is positively impacting our kids! Your children have not seen this video yet so please feel free to share it with them too.

Sincerely.
Mrs. Monk

Plug in to Serve

In our team huddle today, we talked about how we need give back to our community.   The Boosterthon staff helped our students learn the importance of being involved in our community and about being aware of other people's needs.  The students also learned that once they are plugged into our community, they need to give of their time and help out our community by serving.

Keep working on getting those pledges.  We are up to $11 a lap!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

$5 per lap!

We are already up to $5 per lap on our 1st night of working towards pledges.  You guys are incredible!  We are in 2nd place in 4th grade right now.  Let's work hard tonight to see if we can move up into 1st place in our grade.

Today the students were informed of our goal of making the 4th and 5th grade run a color run!  Also in our team huddle students learned a quick overview of the topics we are going to be discussing each day in our team huddles.  They are learning how our community is a great place to be and how to work, live, play, and give back to our community!

Let's work hard tonight to earn those pledges!

Sincerely,
Mrs, Monk

Boosterthon is HERE!

It's that time of year again!  Boosterthon is back and ready to help us raise money for our school. This year there are so many new and fun additions to this amazing fundraiser.  The Boosterthon team was here today and got our students really excited about the run this year.  This year we have a community focus throughout the character lessons.  The students will learn the importance of being involved in our community.  Be on the look out for more updates on the character lessons.

Tonight, please take the time to log on and register.  Just for registering your child will receive a FREE Boosterthon bracelet!  No donations needed for this... that's right!  Just for registering your child will receive a free gift.  How cool!?!?  There are also mobile apps to make pledging easier to do on your mobile devices.

Our class has decided on a team name already: Monk's Minions!  I have attached some pictures from our fun pep rally today.

Enjoy and log on to www.funrun.com today!  Our class code is 8700-0960.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk

Our theme this year is Rock'n Town LIVE!!!

Great posters made for our class already!

Here is our Pledge-O-Meter.  And yes, the top prize does say PIE Your Teacher. :-)

Personal Narrative

After sharing with all of you about personal narratives at our parent teacher conference, I thought I would write a quick post including some of the anchor charts we have used to help guide our personal narrative writings.
A personal narrative story focuses on an important small moment in time.  A great personal narrative follows the story arch of having a beginning that hooks the reader, a rising action, the climax (which is the small moment), the falling action, and an ending that wraps the entire story up.  As you begin to see writing come home, please take the time to read your child's work and help them be a good critic of their own writing.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk
Here is a snapshot of some of the leads the students are using.  The beginning of our story is the perfect place to hook the reader.  It is so important that students have a lead that draws the reader into their story.

Here are some of the characteristics of a strong personal narrative.  Following the story arch allows students to make sure they have every component of a personal narrative.

Students sometimes have a hard time narrowing down a topic to a small moment.  Students tend to want to write about an entire vacation or event.  We use the illustration of a watermelon story to help students narrow their focus.  We want to take a slice from the watermelon, and then we want to choose just 1 seed from that slice to write about.  This helps our story stay focused and can really allow students to elaborate on a moment versus telling a lot of surface facts.

Fire Safety Clowns

On Tuesday, we had a visit from the Frisco Fire Safety Clowns. We learned about motor vehicle safety, along with seatbelt and airbag safety.

We also learned about Internet safety.  We learned we should never give out personal information over the web.  Students learned about appropriate pictures to post as well.

We were also informed about smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The clowns also informed the students about water safety.

Be sure to see the pictures below to get a sneak peak of the show.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Monk
